AN EXCITING opportunity for amateur photographers in North Staffordshire is about to be launched by The Sentinel in January.

The Sentinel’s Chief Photographer Steve Bould will be heading up a new photography group called SnapperSquad.

It will allow amateur photographers to get a behind-the-scenes glimpse of life as a professional photojournalist. The launch of ‘SnapperSquad’ provides people of all ages with a unique opportunity to work with The Sentinel’s own photographers – with regular prizes for the best work and the chance to have your work published in-paper and online by one of the largest regional newspapers in the country.

SnapperSquad is open to all, whether you are a novice or an experienced photographer, who uses a quality camera or smartphone.

Monthly SnapperSquad Meets

The group will meet at the Emma Bridgewater factory in Hanley on the third Thursday of each month.   There will be an admission charge of £4.50 per person, which will include a buffet with tea and coffee.

Steve Bould said: “At each meeting we will stage a competition where members will be encouraged to bring a print along focusing on a particular topic – with the winning photographer chosen by the members on the first meeting will earn a £100 prize. The image will then go on to form part of The Sentinel 2017 calendar.

Professional Mentoring and Networking

At each of the monthly meetings a Sentinel photographer will be on hand to answer sessions as well as giving tips and hints on how to approach and deal with certain situations.  Guest speakers will also be attending on certain months from various walks of photographic life – providing an insight into their lives as photographers.

SnapperSquad members will also enjoy access to a special closed Facebook group.

Members will also have the opportunity to see their work in printed and credited within The Sentinel each week.

Each Monday Steve will post a theme or topic for you to contribute to by close of play on Thursday. This could be an ongoing weather situation, or just general topics such as landscapes, places of interest or portraits.

As well as offering other discounts to SnapperSquad members, The Sentinel is also planning to give members access to venues and events where you would not usually be allowed.
