Realising that sometimes you – our visitors/readers/lurkers/loiterer’s (delete as appropriate) –  often just want a very quick sentence or two to explain what a show is all about and whether its going to be your cup of tea – the best way I can sum up Stones In His Pockets at the New Vic Theatre in Newcastle-under-Lyme is to say that in a nutshell, if you loved Father Ted…then you’ll love Stones in His Pockets.

So that brief parallel may have been enough to entice some of you to have already stopped visiting/reading/lurking/loitering (delete as appropriate) and already taken card out of wallet/purse, eager to secure a good seat.  For the rest of you, it should be just as easy a sell.  You see, this remarkable two handed play is simply one of the most joyous, laughter and tear inducing pieces of work ever to come out of Ireland.

Written by Marie Jones the story follows what happens when a major Hollywood film studio descends on a village in rural Ireland for their next big shoot,  and finds that it has a huge need to recruit all of its film extras from the local community. As the story unfolds, just two talented actors brilliantly bring to life over 15 extraordinary characters – from Burly security guards to Hollywood divas with dodgy Irish accents.

The play, which started life a as very small scale fringe festival production, has won numerous awards including the Lawrence Oliver Award for Best New Comedy, as well as three Tony nominations on Broadway. It has also spent  five fabulous years in the West End.

This play is a sheer delight from beginning to end, and the kind of production in which the New Vic Theatre team excel, and we cannot wait to see their treatment of it.

If you book to see this – you won’t regret it for a second.
