From 16 May – 8 June New Vic Theatre present Blonde Bombshells of 1943 – based on The Last of The Blonde Bombshells (available here on DVD), which was a sweet musical drama made back in the early noughties, which starrred Judi Dench.

The original movie, on which this stage show is based, was a musical drama about a recently widowed woman who realises that the happiest days of her life were spent playing in a swing band during the Second World War.

Alan Plater’s stage version is more of  a laugh-out-loud, feel good musical,  filled with 1940’s classics by Glen Miller, The Andrews Sisters, George Formby and Fats Waller performed live by a sensational swing band.

Blonde-Bombshells-Of-1943-New-Vic-Theatre-Staffordshire-3It follows the trials and tribulations of Betty and her all girl swing group – the Blonde Bombshells.

Opportunity comes knocking for the all-girl troupe when a TV show offers to shine a searchlight on their talent.  But Betty hits a snag when half her band go AWOL with American GIs.

So to make sure the band is not blitzed for good she recruits a motley crew to her ranks  – including an innocent schoolgirl, a nun, an upper-class tart and a draft-dodging drummer not afraid of donning a frock.
